Financial Security and Disaster Planning

By: Laura Day DelCotto

Since 2004, each September has been designated as National Preparedness Month.  Efforts by multiple federal, state and local agencies seek to promote and encourage family, business, and community emergency planning. Many online sites such as National Safety Council and the government Ready site are free resources available for anyone to access.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (the “CFPB”) also produces a checklist for “financial security” and disaster planning, which you can find here and also available at the CFPB website.  This is an excellent resource, not only for advance planning for any possible emergency, but to also stay up to date and organized in your financial affairs. Printing out the checklist and keeping it handy can prove invaluable, as we are usually inundated with online forms and information.

Admittedly, this is something way down on everyone’s ‘to do’ list. However, getting this done at least once a year is a good exercise for all of us, and a way to complete a review of your ongoing financial affairs.  Keep up the good work!
