Nationwide, the American Bankruptcy Institute reports that total bankruptcy filings were down 14 percent in calendar year 2012; commercial filings were down 22 percent. The 2012 filings were the lowest total since the financial crisis of 2008. Chapter 11 filings decreased 10 percent from the filings in 2011 (7,760 in 2012 versus 8,658 in 2011).
In the Eastern District of Kentucky, total bankruptcy filings for the calendar year 2012 decreased 18 percent from 2011. According to the filing statistics from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, there were only 8,923 bankruptcy filings in 2012, down from 10,845.  Despite the downward trend in filings, Chapter 11 case filings remained steady.  There were 31 Chapter 11 cases filed in 2012, up one from 2011.

 There were 30 total Chapter 11 cases filed in 2012; at least 1 case was converted. There were 30 Chapter 11 cases filed in 2011, but due to local formulas this figure may not include cases converted to Chapter 11.
